Aquaculture ClusterREDT lead a project to set up an Auckland regional aquaculture cluster focused on integrating land-based and marine-based sectors. The eventual aim is to produce high value products for domestic and export markets. Benefits include employment/career opportunities, research projects, and optimization and sharing of resources. The cluster has already branded itself as AquA Incorporated. Ministry for the Environment's Aquaculture Planning Fund has funded the first stage of the project to produce a business plan and quadruple bottom line assessment which was delivered in December 2009. The work included investigation of potential regional networks and linkages in farming, food processing, distribution, and tourism opportunities. It builds on previous industry and Government studies and links closely with the Aquaculture New Zealand Strategy. The project team is well underway with putting a Governance structure in place. The structure may include a range of development pathways to achieve the overarching Cluster objective. The cluster has drafted recommendations to government on regulatory changes. Anyone involved in aquaculture who would like to join our cluster or would like more information, please email Leanna at info@aqua.org.nz Steering Group:
