Student in Employment

17 year-old Wynton Dale from Mahurangi College, was interested in computing and graphic design and agreed that the RYTT broker should canvas local IT and graphic design companies. Signzeal Ltd, expressed interest in meeting Wynton and, with help from the college, a portfolio of WD's work in art and design was put together.

Following a successful interview, Wynton did two days work experience with Signzeal, and although a bit nervous, showed enough potential and creative attitude to give Signzeal the confidence to offer him a six month fixed term contract with a view to a formal apprenticeship in signwriting and graphics after that. The RYTT broker helped the client and employer with supporting paperwork.

During the first two months, the broker visited Signzeal most weeks to make sure all was going well. The employer was very supportive and each month a review was held of the positive and negative achievements and goals set for next month. Mistakes were accepted as long as Wynton learnt from them. By the third month, the broker's visits were reduced to monthly with an occasional phone call. Contact was also maintained with Wynton's family.

Outcomes

At the end of the six months, Wynton had become a valuable young employee, was offered long term permanent employment, Signzeal invested in new graphics design equipment for his use while at work, and an agreement for a modern apprenticeship was entered into with Creative Trades industry training organization and NZSDA. Wynton designed his own graphics for his business card. The company's professionalism has been recognized by a national design award and Wynton was part of the team that worked on the winning project.

Signzeal believes Wynton has a bright future in the industry and has 'buddied' him with one of the two Directors so that his potential can be fully realised.

Wynton entered his graphic design work into the New Zealand Sign and Display award which was judged in April 09.
